Brake Line Fittings and Adaptors: A Complete Guide
Brake line fittings are the connectors that join hoses, hard lines, calipers and master cylinders into a sealed hydraulic system. Get one wrong and you have a leak, a soft pedal, or a joint that will not seal no matter how hard you tighten it. This guide covers how to identify what you need.
The four things that define a brake fitting
Every fitting is described by four properties. Establish all four and you can order with confidence.
- Thread size and pitch — for example M10x1
- Male or female — external or internal thread
- Fixed or swivel — whether the fitting rotates on the hose
- Sealing method — flare, banjo, or O-ring
Thread sizes you will actually encounter
Brake systems use a small number of threads, but the differences between them are small enough to be dangerous.

Pitch matters as much as diameter
An M10x1 will start to thread into an M10x1.25 port. It will feel like it is going in, then bind after two or three turns. Forcing it damages both threads. If a fitting stops turning freely before it seats, stop and check the pitch rather than reaching for a longer bar.
The practical test: count threads over 10mm. M10x1 gives ten threads, M10x1.25 gives eight. A thread pitch gauge costs very little and removes the guesswork entirely.
Male, female, fixed and swivel
A male fitting has the external thread and screws into a threaded port. A female fitting has an internal thread and receives a male union.
A swivel nut rotates freely on the hose end. This matters more than people expect. With a fixed fitting, tightening the nut twists the hose, so you have to pre-position the hose to end up straight once torqued. With a swivel, you position the hose and then tighten the nut independently. On anything with a defined routing path, swivel is easier and puts less stress on the hose.
Circlip groove fittings
Many VAG, Ford, Renault and Toyota applications retain the hose at the caliper or chassis bracket with a circlip or horseshoe clip that locates in a machined groove on the fitting body.
If the hose you removed had a clip retaining it, you need a circlip groove fitting. A plain fitting of the same thread will screw in, but nothing will hold it in the bracket and the hose will be free to rotate and chafe.
Circlip groove fittings also vary by hex size — 17mm and 19mm are both common — and some patterns have a milled flat for clearance. Vehicle-specific versions exist for VAG, Ford, Porsche and Toyota.
Banjo fittings
A banjo is a hollow bolt passing through a round fitting body, sealed by a soft washer either side. It is used where a straight threaded union would not fit, most commonly at calipers.
Three things to get right:
- Bolt size — M8, M10, M12, 3/8" and 7/16" are the common ones
- Two new copper washers per bolt — one either side of the banjo. Copper deforms permanently to seal, so a used washer has already conformed to different surfaces and work-hardened. Reusing them is the single most common cause of a weeping joint after a hose change
- Bolt type — standard, double (for two hoses on one port), or restricted (for turbo oil feeds)
Flare types — the one that catches people out
Hard lines seal by a flared end clamped by a tube nut. There are three flare angles in common use and they are not interchangeable:
- 37 degree (JIC / AN) — used on AN fittings and motorsport plumbing
- 45 degree (SAE double flare) — traditional American and British brake practice
- DIN bubble flare — the convex flare used on most modern European vehicles
A 37 degree flare in a 45 degree seat will make contact on a line rather than a face. It may hold at rest and weep under pressure, which is the worst possible failure mode because it passes a visual check. If you are replacing hard lines, match the flare to the existing seat rather than to the thread alone.
Bulkhead fittings and lock nuts
A bulkhead fitting passes a line through a panel and is secured by a lock nut on the far side. It provides a solid anchor point so hose movement is not transmitted to the union.
Common sizes are M10x1, M16 external, 3/8" UNF and 7/16". Note the external thread is often larger than the internal — an M16 external bulkhead may carry an M10x1 or 3/8" internal thread. Check both dimensions.
Adaptors
An adaptor converts one thread or standard to another. Common uses include converting a metric caliper port to an AN-3 hose end, joining imperial master cylinders to metric lines, or splitting a single feed to two circuits with a tee.
Each adaptor adds a joint, and every joint is a potential leak. Use them where they solve a real problem, not to avoid buying the correct fitting.
Identifying what you have
If you are working from an old hose rather than a parts diagram:
- Measure the thread diameter across the crests with a vernier — a nominal M10 measures around 9.8mm
- Check the pitch with a thread gauge
- Note male or female
- Look for a circlip groove and any retaining clip
- Check whether the nut swivels on the hose
- If it is a banjo, measure the bolt, not the hole
Photograph both ends of the old hose alongside a ruler before you throw it away. It is far easier to identify a fitting from a picture than from memory.
